Empowering the youth to design a better future for their communities*
When I think about why I do what I do, it always comes back to one simple belief: technology should be a force that uplifts people not just individuals, but entire communities. That belief became the foundation for a project that is deeply personal to me and my team: designing and delivering a three-day AI for Good bootcamp that gives young people many from previously disadvantaged backgrounds the tools to create real, meaningful change.
Why Empowering African Youth in AI Matters*
Africa’s AI revolution is already underway and I’ve always believed that its young people are the continent’s greatest advantage. Our mission is to make sure they’re not watching this transformation from the sidelines but leading it. Everything we do is about preparing them for that future: building 21st-century skills, nurturing curiosity and critical thinking, and laying the foundations for a society that is not only digitally connected, but also inclusive, diverse, and driven by innovation.
But beyond skills and knowledge, empowerment is about representation and agency. Too often, the global AI conversation is shaped elsewhere in contexts far removed from the realities of African communities.
By enabling young people to design solutions to problems they understand intimately, we’re helping them see themselves not just as consumers of technology, but as its creators and custodians. It’s about rewriting the narrative:
Africa doesn’t need to catch up it has the talent, the creativity, and the perspective to lead. And when we centre youth in that story, we unlock the continent’s most powerful catalyst for change.
Building the Future: How We Designed the Programme*
From a pool of 35,000 high school learners across South Africa, we selected 520 promising future leaders to join our weekend bootcamps. Each session was designed to do more than teach it was built to spark curiosity, encourage collaboration, and build confidence. We used real-world challenges as a launchpad, turning ideas into tangible AI-powered prototypes and showing participants how technology could be applied to the issues they cared about most.
We also placed a strong emphasis on mentorship, storytelling, and teamwork. Participants learned not only how to code or conceptualise solutions but also how to pitch, collaborate, and think critically about impact. The result was a transformative experience one that showed them what’s possible when creativity meets purpose.

School Program
We focused on identifying and nurturing talented female high school learners, supporting them to pursue tertiary education in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
STEAM Career Program
We extended this support into higher education, helping graduates transition into university and build successful careers in STEAM contributing to a more gender-equal, future-ready workforce.
Start-Up Program
To catalyse innovation beyond the classroom, we built Open Innovation Communities bringing together entrepreneurs, corporates, and startups for meetups, ideation sessions, co-creation programmes, and incubation support.
Real Stories, Real Impact: What We’ve Achieved So Far*
Since launching in 2018, our AI in Africa programme has already reached over 35,000 young people, empowering them to become changemakers in their communities. What began as a pilot bootcamp focused solely on girls has grown into a nationwide initiative sparking innovation, purpose, and digital inclusion.
With 216 AI-based solutions developed across South Africa, 200+ contributors backing the cause, and over R4 million in bursaries, internships, and job placements awarded, our impact is measurable, meaningful, and just getting started. But beyond the numbers are the real stories of young people who discovered their potential, of ideas that turned into action, and of a generation that now sees technology not as a barrier, but as a bridge to a better future.
